RWDRT: Lauryn Evarts, Creator of The Skinny Confidential

When someone asks me to recommend a podcast that will truly inspire them, my first go-to is always to tell them they HAVE to listen to The Skinny Confidential Him & Her podcast (I was on an episode!). I love that she does the podcast with her hubby Michael…but aside from her podcast, Lauryn Evarts, founder of The Skinny Confidential, is truly a media mogul who motivates and inspires her followers every day with her “realness” talks, and I knew I had to sit down with her to chat.  Here’s what the author, blogger, podcaster (and animal lover!) has to tell us about how she got started and her go-to skinny snacks…

Tell us a little about TSC and how you got started.

The Skinny Confidential is a blog, a brand, a podcast, and it’s your cheeky resource to all things beauty, wellness and skin. I launched it when I was totally broke in college, teaching Pure Barre and living at my godparent’s house. I saw a space in the market for something that connected women everywhere online. An online community. It wasn’t just about me, it was about learning tips and tricks from other people, too. The name of my blog and brand has nothing to do with being skinny- it’s all about getting ‘the skinny.’  Since starting the blog, The Skinny Confidential has grown into a book, fitness guide & meal plan, podcast & YouTube channel.

You rescued your dog Boone which is amazing! Tell us about your dog and why you recommend adoption.

Boone had been living in a cage at a breeder’s who also had about 100 chihuahuas. He was in this little cage for about a year. It was so small- the size of my arm. We went to pick out a new chihuahua and then we saw Boone. My husband had this severe, intense reaction and said that we HAD to get him. I’d never rescued a dog and didn’t know much about out. Honestly, I was a little skeptical. Now, I would never do anything different. He was so insecure and timid when we first brought him home. He’s turned into this playful, happy, grateful, amazing, sweet, little dog. Seeing him transform and flourish has been so cool.

What are three tips all dog moms need to know?

Pumpkin, pumpkin, pumpkin. Canned pumpkin is packed full of vitamins & nutrients. It helps their vision, their stomachs, provides lots of fiber- there’s just so many benefits.

If they have sore joints, glucosamine in their food really helps too. I do this a couple times a week and it really helps chihuahuas and little dogs who have bad joints.

And always brush their teeth. Bad teeth is the leading cause of death in small dogs.

You’re an author, blogger, and animal advocate. How do you manage your time? Give us specifics!

Balance is very important to me. Right now, I’m in a chapter where I’m very concentrated on work and my business. It’s a little hectic but I’m embracing it because I don’t have children right now. To manage my time, I’m always passively multi-tasking. I’m a big fan of batching my time- so Wednesday I do all my calls so the tasks on the other days of the week aren’t interrupted. I answer emails twice a day for about an hour while I’m on the treadmill or having a facial massage. I also invest in taking Ubers and having my hair and makeup done so I can work uninterrupted for that hour. Where focus goes, energy flows, so I’m very much about my business right now.

How do you maintain a gorgeous figure? What are some of your go-to meals and workouts?

Right now I’m really obsessed with low resistance training so I do a lot of mat stuff. My trainer, Kim Kelly and I also do the TSC Body Guide at least three times a week. And I love to walk. Running isn’t for me because I feel like it makes my face and boobs sag so I stay away from pounding the pavement. I also stay away from things that raise my cortisol levels. My business is constant chaos so I want my workouts to lower my cortisol. Fiber! I love fiber- fiber at every meal. My fave go-to is GG crackers, a bit of Greek cream cheese, some lox, capers and red onion. I’ll throw this in a container and take it with me. Intermittent fasting is great especially when traveling. Also, tons of water, tons of sleep, a little wine & a bit of CBD.

Favorite cocktail recipe?

A spicy, skinny margarita. Blanco tequila, a touch of Cointreau, jalapeño, and lots of lime. Add pomegranate seeds if you’re feeling festive- oh, and always a half rim of salt.

Favorite skinny snack?

Right now I’m having a huge moment with artichoke salads. It has chopped artichoke, a little olive oil, fresh parmesan cheese and lemon- it’s the best thing ever. Tuna tartar is another favorite right now. Also melon and prosciutto. Taking my time at the farmer’s market is really fun, too. Trying different raw cheeses, getting cage free eggs and just really scoping out what’s fresh and taking my time at the market is something I like to do as well.

You talk a lot about skincare and have glowing skin. What is your biggest skincare tip/secret?

Facial massage and lymphatic drainage. When I had jaw surgery, I really had to find ways to bring down the inflammation and bloat. I tried so many different things and facial massage was the number one thing that helped. Now I’m obsessed and I talk about it on the blog all the time.

Also, oils. Always oils. They’re so good for removing makeup and I swear they’re the key to youth. Right now I’m loving a monk oil that I randomly found. Vintner’s Daughter serum and all of the products by Kate Somerville and Dr. Dennis Gross are my go-tos- I’m obsessed. I’m having a huge moment with Skinceuticals right now, too. I love their C E Ferulic serum. It’s a known fact that all the girls who work at Alison Brod (a huge NYC PR firm) use this. They even hide it because people will steal it. It’s literally liquid gold. Most importantly, I always stay out of the sun and wear SPF all the time.

What are your three must-have beauty products?

Caffeinated sunscreen, tons of ice- ice anything, (give me all the ice- so good for inflammation), and my Clarisonic Uplift. It’s so good to stimulate the face, get the circulation going. It’ll contour the face and leave you looking like a Kardashian.

What is a book, podcast or resource you recommend?

Tim Ferriss’ podcast if you really want to learn. He has mastered the art of interviewing. It really is an art and is completely underrated. He’s incredible and really gets his guests to open up in a unique way.

For hustling, Gary Vaynerchuk’s podcast is great. He does a great job of calling people out on their bullshit, makes them wake up and take accountability.

The Brand Gap is an amazing book about branding. It’s an easy, simple, way to see how powerful branding is. I think it’s underrated and such a key component of building a meaningful business. Also, one of my favorite authors is Robert Greene- he’s just an insane writer and talks a lot about strategy.

For fun, I love Cat Marnell’s book, How to Murder Your Life. You won’t be able to put it down, I swear.

Favorite failure?

I fail every single day. Every night I lay my head on the pillow and think about what I could’ve done better. It’s just part of the game. If you’re a football player on the field, you’re gonna get hurt. It’s just the way it is. I honestly don’t think of failures as failures though- I just find another way. If I can’t get in through the front door, side door, or back door, then I’m gonna skydive in. Finding different angles is one of my favorite parts of this business.

How do you define success?

To me, being successful means you’re waking up and creating your own future on your own terms. It’s liberating to wake up feeling like that and know that you’re in charge of your day. You really are the creator of your own future and once that clicked, I realized that’s what success is for me.

What purchase of $100 or less has most positively impacted your life in the last six months (or in recent memory)?

My CBD pen. The one I have is by Beboe and I love the Downtime Blend. It really helps me unwind. I was going to bed at 2am, but now I take two hits & I’m asleep by 10:30. It helps me wake up earlier and my whole day is more productive. My phone is a huge part of my business so I also love this little portable charger that I take everywhere with me. I have three. It’s called the myCharge HubMax Portable Charger and you can find it on Amazon.

Where can everyone find you?
