Adoptable Dogs of the Week: Susie’s Senior Dogs

With the upcoming launch of my new book, Maverick and Me, coming up quickly, I decided to start a new blog series where I will feature five adoptable dogs I think anyone would be lucky to have!

First up: Susie’s Senior Dogs.  I love following Susie’s Instagram and seeing all the wonderful, amazing senior dogs that are up for adoption ALL over the country (not just in one city!). Here are just a few of the senior dogs she’s currently trying to help find homes. Are YOU or someone you know a good fit?  I’d love for all of you to share this via email and social media with anyone you think would love to take one of these love bugs home :)

Buckus, 11 years old (Philadelphia, PA)

11 year old Buckus has been looking for his forever home for the last year and half. He is a lover to all creatures – people, dogs, cats included! It appears it’s just his age that is holding back adopters. But we know Buckus will bring pure joy to the family who chooses him. And he is the most affectionate elder gentleman you might ever meet! With his love and charm, Buckus will undoubtedly leave you forever changed.

Buckus is fantastic with dogs, cats, and people of all ages. He is currently living with another dog, as well as cats, in foster care and is doing great! He seems to be continuously overlooked only due to his age. He is unbelievably affectionate, seeking belly rubs and a good cuddle fest from any human in sight; he loves to play with his tennis balls, whether his humans throw them or not; and he is perfectly house-trained!  Buckus does have a minor case of laryngeal paralysis, which can be treated by surgery. However, in his case, the vet believes surgery is not necessary as long as he doesn’t overexert himself, which has proven to be quite an easy task due to his age.  Buckus is looking for an adopter ASAP! His current foster home has come into a predicament where they can no longer house Buckus until his forever home is found.  To adopt Buckus, please email with any questions.

Jazmine, 10 years old (Bend, OR)

10 year old Jazmine just gets better with age and hopes a loving family will recognize her senior beauty straight away. She is currently living at the shelter because her former owner was unable to care for her anymore. Jazmine still has *loads of love* to give away…she just needs somebody to give it to!  Jazmine is a gentle soul with lots of love to give. She has lived with other dogs and enjoys their company but she’s not overly playful. She loads right up into a crate and, while her previous owner kept her mostly outdoors, she would love a home where she can be trained to be indoors with her family.  Jazmine is going to be a wonderful companion for some lucky family….could it be you? Jazmine’s adoption fee has been sponsored by a wonderful volunteer! Adopter must meet Jazmine in-person.  To adopt Jazmine, please email with questions and to submit your application.

Banjo, 8 years old (Colorado Springs, CO)

8 year old Banjo spent all of his years making puppies for someone else’s profit. Thankfully, back in February Banjo was pulled by @nationalmilldogrescue and they rescued him from that life. This good ole boy is great with other dogs of all sizes, both male and female. And he likes to climb on people to give hugs. Too cute! Banjo is a lover through and through, but he’s still looking for the right person to give him a chance at The Good Life.  National Mill Dog Rescue wrote, “Banjo is just a good ole boy. He is a male boxer who loves and craves attention. He is active and enjoys his toys, running and playing…so he would be a definite partner for those cool morning or evening walks. He will need a yard so he can continue his learning journey in a safe environment. Although Banjo likes to keep busy, he also likes his quiet time and his naps.”  Banjo does well with both boy and girl fur babies whether they are big or small. Banjo truly loves everyone. He is still learning what the dog life is all about, that it can be safe and loving, and he sometimes gets afraid of loud noises. Assuring love and guidance will do the trick with time. This boy wants a chance to live life – to love and be a devoted member of your family. Could you open up your home to this sweet boy?” Banjo MUST be adopted in-person at the shelter. No transport.  To adopt Banjo, please email to submit your application.

Lucy, 9 years old (Atlanta, GA)

9 year old Lucy is a very dog-friendly senior sweetheart. Her elderly owner recently passed away and Lucy ended up at animal control. Lucy has been depressed and has missed her person immensely. Since being pulled by a rescue, her spirits have risen and she’s starting to enjoy everyday life again! Now Lucy needs someone who she can count on for the rest of her life.  Her mood has improved, but Lucy is still desperately seeking her forever home. We know opening your heart to a senior seems like a difficult thing to do, but seniors can be the best choice of dogs. They have gotten their yaya’s out, they are house trained and have typically settled into how life works in the home. Lucy is a love bug. She gets along with the other dogs and loves her time getting some love from her humans. She walks well on a leash and loves the little humans who visit her.  As for the adoption policy, they require personal references or vet reference (or both). As for transport, they will issue a travel certificate if that is needed. They also adopt outside our area if they can get a home visit done by another rescue.  To adopt Lucy, please email Out of the Box Boxer Rescue at to submit an application.

Winifred, 13 years old (Grand Rapids, MI)

13 year old Winifred is an easygoing senior lady who enjoys good company and hearty naps. Wini was adopted out once, but returned shortly after because she was “not snuggly enough” and “doesn’t like walks.” Miss Winifred has proved otherwise to the shelter staff and likely just needs a little time to warm up. She might not want to go on very long walks, but she sure will warm up that seat on the couch for you! Wini is a great little old dog who deserves to find her happily-ever-after ending.  @muskegonhumane society wrote, “Winifred is a 13 year old maltese/shihtzu mix. We pulled her from another shelter in Michigan that is much busier and usually more full than our shelter. She was originally an owner surrender because the elderly owner either went into a home or passed away.”  Despite Winifred’s older age, she’d like you to know that she has plenty of years left to enjoy a good home and good company! And there’s some perks that come with old age too – like, for example, Wini can sleep just about anywhere and she loves to be cuddled and pet. She doesn’t require much work or long walks. Her many years have left her confident in who she is.  Winifred is good with everybody and everything (dogs, cats and respectful kids included), but needs to go to a home suited for an older dog; quiet and gentle and full of fuzzy blankets and warm dog beds. Wini would be a great cuddling partner and doesn’t demand much at all! She also LOVES riding in the car with her hair blowing in the wind while she sits in the passenger seat. Could you be the one for her?  Winifred MUST be adopted in person at the shelter. No transport.  To adopt Wini, please email the shelter at with any questions and to submit your application.
