Big Announcement: My New Book “Maverick and Me”!

I’m SO excited to finally be able to share the news about my new children’s book, Maverick and Me! I have been working on this book for awhile now and I am so thrilled to be able to finally share the news of this passion project! As most of you know, I rescued my little dog Maverick, 3.5 years ago, and have learned so much about the dog rescue world and, of course, the responsibility and love that goes into having a dog. I am a huge animal lover and really wanted to write this book to shine a light on all the amazing animals that are in need of homes.

I grew up with dogs and never knew about the option of rescuing a dog as a child. A little over three years ago, I had come off of fostering seven puppies for a local animal rescue group, and thought I would take a break for a few weeks. Just when I thought I was in the clear, I got a call saying a two week old puppy had been picked up from under the freeway and I was asked if I could take him since he needed someone who could syringe feed him since he was so small and young. I brought little Mav home and fostered him until he was healthy enough to potentially be adopted.

After the first family met Maverick, I had a feeling that I hadn’t had with the other seven puppies I had fostered; I knew I had developed a connection with him and that the only place he would be going, was home with me. As Maverick grew up and I started taking him to various places, I found children to be especially fascinated with him; “what is that tiger-looking puppy?” and “where can I get a magical dog like that,” they would ask.  As I began telling kids about Maverick’s story and where he came from, I saw the excitement and fascination in kids’ eyes as they learned all about this cool looking puppy.

I decided to write this book for children so they are made aware of the option of adopting when the time comes to get their first pet. When I was little, I never knew about adopting or rescuing a dog, but I would’ve loved to have had a dog with an interesting story to run to school and tell my friends about. Maverick has been such a huge gift in my life and I am so grateful to have had the experience of fostering puppies and even more blessed to have found my little pup! I have learned so much about having my own dog but also a lot about myself in the process. I have learned about unconditional love, the responsibilities of having a dog, the time and love you give your animals and the amazing feeling of coming home at the end of a long day to snuggle with my Maverick.

My goal with this book is really to teach kids about the option of rescuing a dog but also about all the ways they can help the many animals in need. Whether you rescue, foster, spend time volunteering, donate supplies or just spread the word about the thousands of loving animals that need to find their forever homes; all of it is important and makes a huge difference in the lives of all of these special animals. I hope you all are as excited as I am about this book, and hopefully helping many dogs find homes.  You can click this link to pre-order the book and receive exclusive digital content. 3. Hi Katherine!

This is so amazing. I love the idea of a children’s book about animal rescue. My family always had pets when I was growing up and, like you, I didn’t know that rescuing animals was an option till I was much older. I have since rescued two cats and I am currently fostering kittens from the ASPCA.

I am also in the process of writing on my own children’s book inspired by my cat, Tiger Lily, so any advice you can give me on writing, getting published, etc would be great. Thanks.
