My Favorite #bewellsmoothies and Why They Work

For those of you who don’t know, Kelly LeVeque is one of my favorite certified holistic nutritionists, wellness expert and health coaches based here in Los Angeles.  Her formula guarantees to nourish your body with what it needs while turning down hunger hormones, keeping you satisfied for hours and limiting excessive sugar. Her philosophy is to help you build a meal that satisfies you with protein, fat, fiber, and greens. (Aka: #bwbkfab4) The bewellsmoothie is a true meal replacement shake that is customizable with your dietary needs, flavor preferences and meal schedule. No matter what your dietary preferences are her goal is about helping you develop sustainable habits to live a healthy and balanced life.

The Formula: 1 serving protein powder + 1-2tbs fat + 1-2tbs fiber + 1/4c fruit + 1c nut milk + greens

Disclaimer: If you are looking to grab a smoothie out at local juice shop (think twice or build your own) because chances are it is loaded with excessive sugars , both fructose and glucose. Most smoothies contain over two cups of fruit with added superfoods like gogi berries and dates that aren’t doing you any favors. Fructose turns to fat faster than any other form of carbohydrate. When it’s metabolized in the liver, fructose converts to glycerol (a sugar alcohol) that’s directly used to turn free fatty acids into fat. Lastly, if the glucose spike is excessive it can induce a blood sugar roller- coaster that will leave you hormonally hungry with increased cravings later. Balance is everything.

Studies have confirmed that women who start their day with sufficient protein not only feel more relaxed throughout the day and around food, but also eat less overall. Protein helps to calm hunger hormones, which allows you to ultimately reach that 4-6 hour window without feeling like you need to snack in between.

Fat helps your body produce hormones and is essential for the absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. Fats also increase insulin sensitivity so that your muscles absorb glucose more efficiently instead of storing it as fat. Recent studies have shown that a high fat diet is beneficial in that it promotes weight loss. Fats will not make you gain weight, but rather turn down hunger hormones and allow you to balance blood sugar.

#fiber

The BWS feeds the microbiome with insoluble fiber and ensures that you get your daily dose of vitamins and minerals from food. Studies have confirmed that fiber leaves you feeling full longer and reduces your appetite.   • 1 Serving Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1/4 Avocado
  • 1-2 tbsp Chia Seed
  • Squeeze juice of Lemon
  • Handful of Spinach
  • 1 small persian Cucumber
  • 1/4 cup Mint Leaves
  • 2 cups Unsweetened Nutmilk
  1. Blend all ingredients in high speed blender until smooth.

Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Smoothie

Yes… you can have chocolate for breakfast.

  • 1 Serving Chocolate Protein Powder
  • 1 tbsp Fiber (Chia or Flax Seeds to thicken)
  • 1 tbsp Coconut Oil or Almond Butter
  • 1/2 tsp Himalayan Pink or Coarse Sea Salt (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp Cacao Nibs
  • 2 cups Nut Milk
  • ice
  1. Blend all the ingredients together in high speed blender, except ice.
  2. Add ice and blend to cool.

Mean Matcha Be Well Smoothie

  • 1 Serving Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1-2 tbsp MCT
  • 1-2 tbsp. Chia
  • Handful of Spinach
  • 2-3 cup Nutmilk
  • Matcha (flavoring)
  1. Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend to desired consistency.
